Peggy Papp and Olga Silverstein: "The Daughter Who Said No"
Demonstrates the step by step process of treatment with a 23 year old anorectic and her family. It illustrates the use of a paradoxical approach in which a consultation team is used as a greek chorus to comment on the process of change. Treatment takes place over the period of one year and the narration explains the concepts behind the intervention.
This is an edit of Olga's sessions with a family unable to make the transition from "Family with Children" to Family with Young Adults. " The family consists of a 72 year old father, a 62 year old mother, and two daughters 33 and 29. For the past several years, the family has formed a stable unit that was organized around the underfunctioning of their depressed elder daughter. A therapeutic triangle was employed, but, in this case it was synthesized in the work of a single therapist who confronted the family with multiple communications that alternately advocated stability and change.
